Thermoplastic Injection Molds: Explanation of Basic Components
Thermoplastic injection molds are comprised of intricate components, each with
different mechanical features, which form the detail found in injection molded parts.
- Engineering the correct style and location of the gate is integral
to the strength and durability of the finished part
- The mold can also vary in the method of melt flow, depending on:
- Resins used for production
- Final application of the finished product.
Primary thermoplastic injection mold components may include:
- Slide Core Mold Base - creates the general shape
- Withdrawn before part is ejected from mold
- Used when an undercut is necessary which cannot be done
though a standard mold opening
- Stripper Plate Mold - used when blades or pins are insufficient for removing parts from a mold
- Standard Mold - generally used with an ejector plate when line runners, ejector pins, sleeves and/or blades are sufficient to remove the part from the mold
- Three Plate Mold:
- Used when gate edge position is unacceptable or would be difficult to fill
- Allows for uniform part filling without part-weakening weld lines
- Thread Forming Mold:
- Used with a hot manifold when internal threads are needed
- Part cannot be ejected by a standard stripper plate mold
- Manifold is present to eliminate the runner
